EU Ageing population at heart of new government expert group
On 11 June, a High Level Group of government experts met in Brussels to discuss about the EU ageing population. This new group, set up by the European Commission following the consultation on the Green Paper on Demography (IP/05/322), aims to develop policies adapted to the new EU reality – the ageing population - and to act as a platform for EU Member States to exchange experiences and good practice in key areas, such as: active ageing, care for the elderly dependent and migration.

WHO collaboration with European Commission on Health
The World Health Organization Director General, Dr Margaret Chan, visited the European Commission on 12 June and met its President, Mr. Barroso, and the Commissioner for Health and Consumer Protection, Markos Kyprianou, to discuss about the health consequences of climate change, and the global health security. This was a good opportunity for the European Commission and WHO to discuss on strategic health priorities, and the actions to be taken in partnership to improve health at EU and global level.

“Opportunity for All: the challenge for social and health services in a diverse Europe”
The European social network in cooperation with the German Presidency of the European Union organised a meeting on “Opportunity for All: the challenge for social and health services in a diverse Europe” which brought together delegates from national and European public and private welfare organizations to exchange views and experience on maximizing potential for all, no matter their age, disadvantage or disability. This annual event offers strategic and practical learning, as well as networking opportunities to all those responsible for planning and implementing services all over Europe: planners, politicians, managers and professionals.

Europe in figures - Eurostat yearbook 2006-2007
Eurostat published its yearbook 2006-2007, which presents a selection of statistical data on the European Union, its Member States and candidate countries, and treats areas such as population, education, health, living conditions and welfare, the labour market, the economy, international trade, industry and services, science and technology, the environment, and European regions.
