President’s Message

Dear EFN Members and Colleagues,

Patient safety is a core issue for nurses in Europe. Better patient safety means better quality in care, and is beneficial for all stakeholders. Therefore, it has very high priority in EFN.

Trying to develop better Patient safety through out Europe by transfer of knowledge and good practice and establishing a network of high levelled stakeholders is a very good idea.

To develop better patient safety, it is essential to build systems for registration of unintended incidents, which are grounded on trust between the stakeholders.

To develop better patient safety, all personnel involved in patient treatment and care must report unintended incidents, not to place responsibility for the incident, but to reveal patterns to change the procedures, or to develop better and safer equipment.

I am looking forward to a successful project, which will lessen the number of unintended incidents in the healthcare sector.

                                               Grete Christensen

                                                    EFN President

Croatia Accession to the EU

The second workshop on ‘National Nursing and Midwifery Strategy in the Process of Accessing to the EU’, organised by the Croatian Nurses Association and the Technical Assistance Information Exchange Unit of the European Commission (TAIEX), in Zagreb, Croatia, brought together nursing professionals from all over Croatia: principles of medical universities, nursing faculties, governmental officials, employers and, for the first time, nurses and nursing officials from Bosnia and Herzegovina and Serbia. The workshop focused on nursing curricula and educational programs in Croatia; the EU requirements on Mutual Recognition of Professional Qualifications; and the National Nursing Strategy as part of the Croatian Health Strategy. These workshops are very important before the Taiex mission start as it brings already together all Croatian nursing decision makers: government representatives, the National Nursing Association, the Nursing Council and the Nursing Union.
